What is swing into spring?
The annual "Swing Into Spring" concert is presented by the Albemarle High School Jazz Ensemble each spring in Charlottesville, VA. In addition to the jazz ensemble, the concert features some of the best local and regional jazz musicians. The concert began in 2018 as a fundraiser to help the band pay for their travels as a finalist in the Savannah Swing Central Jazz Festival held in Savannah, GA. Since then, the event has turned into a benefit concert for local organizations in the Charlottesville-Albemarle community. All proceeds for the 2025 concert will be benefiting ReadyKids.
About readykids
Kids are ready for life when they are safe, healthy, nurtured, and prepared for learning. To ensure kids are ready, ReadyKids provides the Charlottesville area with counseling, family support and early learning opportunities.
Ways that ReadyKids Helps
Family Support
Healthy Families offers free support to anyone who is pregnant or has young children. Learn parenting, secrets or get connected with resources, and find new ways to support your child's health development. Get free personalized support for families, starting prenatally or during baby's first few months. Receive activities and information about baby's development and adjusting to have a new baby. Many more opportunities!
Early Learning
ReadySteps encourages parents as a child's first and best teacher through early learning playgroups within their home community. ReadySteps holds playgroups at various playground locations to help families meet each other in their communities and connect with local resources.
ReadySteps Educators facilitate a parent support and early learning program, centered around routines and building community. Our groups are play-based, and include activities similar to those you would see in a preschool classroom, including music, art, imaginative play, literacy and math. Parents and caregivers are active participants in our program, and together we provide kids with experiences designed to promote healthy development. Family Coordination is provided to all enrolled families, and includes developmental screening and home visit sessions. In collaboration with our community partners, we offer regular caregiver support groups with a trained therapist, children’s books to add to your home library, field trips, and activities outside of regular playgroup sessions.
STAR Kids
STAR Kids teaches preschool-age kids to develop self-regulation and problem solving skills to make healthy choices and avoid risky behavior. It provides kids with concrete tools and strategies they can use to successfully navigate their classroom community. Our Educators use the “Al’s Pals- Kids Making Healthy Choices” curriculum, travelling to each classroom to teach 15 to 30-minute lessons twice a week throughout the school year. Our Educators facilitate the lesson with support from classroom teachers. Teachers continue to work with children on the concepts taught throughout the school year.
Our Educators support ongoing learning by partnering with teachers to reinforce the key concepts in their classroom to support an environment of empathy, cooperation, respect and responsibility. Parents receive letters from the program throughout the year discussing the skills their child is learning. These communications also suggest activities to do at home!
Community Engagement
The program Engaged Fathers and Men supports male community members who want a stronger relationship with their children, family, and community. Relational, Engagement, Advocacy, and Legacy are the core components of this program. The program focuses on Advocacy/Community Voice, positive youth development, resources and referrals, and relational skills. In the community, fathers and men receive 1:1 mentoring and support while they discuss fatherhood, masculinity, trauma, healing, and future goals. They also receive support groups at ReadyKids as well as community engagement relating to men's mental health, wellness, re-entry, and fatherhood.
